Squares doesn't have to be boring - by connecting bigger and small tiles you'll bring more dynamic to a room.

Want a subway tile but with a twist? Try laying them 1/3 or changing the size every second row.

To add more movement to a room use a herringbone pattern. Want  herringbone with a little extra umph? Use two different lengths.

Laying tiles at random is more and more popular, just make sure to keep 1/3 tiles spaces at most.  Apart from herringbone the interesting pattern is creating straight rows.
Hexagon tiles are interesting background to any modern interior. Play with shapes to create something truly unique.
